People assume the hard part of a drone shoot is the flying. It's not. The flying is usually the easiest ten minutes of the day. The real work — the part that determines whether we get the shot at all — happens before the drone ever takes off, and it's the part clients almost never see.

Airspace and permission, not just weather

Flathead Lake sits near controlled airspace and busy recreational traffic, so every shoot starts with an airspace check, not a weather check. As FAA Part 107 certified pilots, we plan flight paths around any local restrictions, check NOTAMs, and — where the location calls for it — secure written permission from property owners or park authorities before a single rotor turns.

"The best aerial shot is the one you were legally allowed to take. Everything else is a liability, not a portfolio piece."

Reading the water and the light

Water changes everything about how a shot reads. Glassy water in the early morning turns the lake into a mirror; midday chop kills reflections but adds texture and motion. We schedule waterfront flights around golden hour whenever the brief allows, both for the light and because wind is typically calmest right after sunrise.

Planning the flight path around shoreline, wind, and light before the drone ever leaves the case.

Insurance is part of the shot list

We fly insured on every job, which matters more than people realize on waterfront and property shoots — one gust of wind near a dock or a boat is enough to end a project's trust in a single afternoon. Being licensed and insured isn't a marketing line for us; it's what lets clients say yes to shots they'd otherwise pass on.

  • Every flight is planned around airspace rules first, weather second.
  • Golden hour on water isn't a preference — it's usually the only calm window of the day.
  • Insured flights mean we can say yes to the shots that matter most.

The finished footage looks effortless. That's the point — all the planning is meant to disappear behind the shot.
