A one-second delay in page load time can meaningfully reduce conversions — and the gap only widens from there. Most business owners nod along to that stat and then never actually check their own site's load time. It's worth five minutes, because speed is one of the few conversion factors you can fix without touching your design or your copy.

Why slow sites lose visitors before they even see anything

The moment someone clicks a link, a clock starts. If nothing meaningful appears on screen within a couple of seconds, a real percentage of visitors are already gone — not because they didn't like what you offer, but because they never saw it. Speed isn't a nice-to-have layered on top of a good site. It's the gate everything else has to get through first.

"You can have the best offer in your industry. If your site takes five seconds to load, most people will never see it."

The usual suspects

In almost every slow-site audit we run, the same handful of culprits show up: oversized, uncompressed images; too many third-party scripts (chat widgets, tracking pixels, embedded videos) all loading at once; and hosting that wasn't built to handle real traffic. None of these are exotic problems, and none of them require a full rebuild to fix.

Every extra second of load time is a checkpoint some percentage of visitors won't make it past.

Quick wins that actually move the needle

Compressing and properly sizing images is usually the single biggest lever — full-resolution photos straight from a camera have no place on a live website. Removing scripts you don't actually need (that old chat widget nobody uses, a tracking pixel from a campaign that ended last year) is close behind. And moving to hosting built for your traffic level, rather than the cheapest plan available, closes out most of the remaining gap.

  • Test your actual load time — don't assume it's fine because the site "looks fast" to you.
  • Compress and resize every image before it goes live.
  • Audit and remove scripts and widgets you no longer actively use.

Speed work is unglamorous — nobody screenshots a fast load time for their portfolio. But it's often the highest-leverage change available on an existing site, and it compounds with everything else you do.
